Intensive use of natural resources and destruction of natural landscapes and animal and plant habitats cause rapid and usually irreversible decline of biological diversity determining human well-being. To achieve the aims of sustainable development, the European Union and the whole world pay particular attention to conservation of biological diversity. Although many laws on conservation of biological diversity were adopted, desirable results were not achieved. Conservation of biological diversity is performed using the following three methods: the most desirable one is in situ used for biological diversity in the natural environment; ex situ is applied in artificial conditions; inter situ is a combination of in situ and ex situ methods. The object of the doctoral thesis is ex situ method as scientific literature pays less attention to it. With regard to broader use of plants and to narrow the topic, the thesis focuses on plant diversity conservation and its management. The thesis analyses the Baltic Sea region countries’ experience in conservation of genetic resources of biological diversity and looks for ways to improve management of biological diversity conservation in Lithuania. Expert research reveals management issues of the Lithuanian botanic gardens that are primary institutions engaged in conservation of plant genetic resources using ex situ method.
