In this thesis examined different theoretical perspectives (rational, innovation diffusion, neoinstitutional, resource dependency) to the adoption of management practices, and organizational (internal organizational structure) factors allow a more comprehensive research of the adoption of quality management practices within Lithuanian higher education institutions. Expert survey (empirical research, in which participated 25 Lithuanian higher education institutions), European (international) and national documents, internal organizational structural characteristics data analysis allows to generalize the results and answer the question, what factors have an impact on the adoption of ISO 9001 standard in Lithuanian higher education institutions. The results show that Lithuanian higher education institutions adopt ISO 9001 standard as a practically effective practice, which is compatible with and adaptable to the needs of higher education institution. European (international) and national documents requirements and internal stakeholders (top management) requirements also had an impact on the adoption of ISO 9001 standard within Lithuanian higher education institutions. This shows one of the mechanisms of institutional isomorphism – a coercive-normative pressure of state government institutions through laws and of internal stakeholders’ requirements.
