Abstract
Safety issues are of paramount importance for every person in a society. The ways achieving safety are also important. One of them is to encourage people to protect themselves and others. The practice of foreign countries testify that self-protection citizen initiatives function well enough. It is crucial to comprehend that the burden of responsibility for public safety lies on the communities at large and not only on the law enforcement agencies. Every citizen has civil duties - to act so as not to violate the rights of others, to prevent crimes and to help in resolving criminal activities. This paper deals with legal and other presumptions for a community„s role in crime prevention and crime solving, traditional and recent forms of community involvement and cooperation, presents some recommendations on possible future development of the cooperation process.
