The ongoing changes in the natural environment and public governance system, insufficient effectiveness of the administration of protected natural heritage and deterioration of the status of natural heritage implies the necessity to look for the new instruments and methodologies for the improvement of operation of the system to ensure a timely response to challenges trying to save the endangered values of natural heritage and help ensure their positive functioning in the contemporary global environment. However, the instruments and techniques used often are inadequate, unsuitable for a concrete territory and do not yield the expected results. In this thesis, the author performs a theoretical analysis of the Lithuanian protected natural heritage administration system and looks into the distribution of capacities of the administrations of protected areas in Lithuania in the context of sustainable development. According to the results of this analysis, the author sets forward the directions for improvement of the administration of protected natural heritage in Lithuania.
