The article presents a general survey of Lithuanian transport police activities in 1991-1996. Transport police was the smallest subdivision of Lithuanian police office - it numbered about 400-440 executives, i.e. 2.4 per cent of all office workers. Transport police performed the functions of the public and criminal police in the railways, sea and air transport objects; i.e. investigated and prevented crimes, and protected public order. The integral whole of transport police consisted of the six commissariats (i.e. of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Šeštokai and of the commissariat of the air ports) - and of the central transport police office. There was the improvement of all transport police activities indicators at the end of this period, because the level of crimes was markedly reduced, and the levels of police executives professional competence and intelligence were markedly raised. So, Lithuanian Transport Police is now the serious anticriminal strength, upholding the public order in the railways, sea and air transport objects.
