Abstract

The author discusses the application of death penalty in Western Europe, Scandinavia and other countries of the world during several hundreds of years. In the article, the current situation in Lithuania and the problem of death penalty application in Lithuania is also described. Moreover, the main idea of the article is proven that public opinion cannot be equalled with the will of the nation and that it is not possible to find the essential answer concerning the solution of the problem of death penalty application in Lithuania by conducting a public opinion research.
