The article includes analysis of commercial sex work in Vilnius according to the data accumulated by the Lithuanian AIDS Centre seeking to assess social characteristics and behaviour of the commercial sex workers (CSW) that might be specific to the major risk group to get infected with HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases, i.e. those soliciting on the streets, at the railway station and those working in escort agencies, and might course spread of HIV in this subpopulation and, consequently, in general population. Street sex workers appeared to be deprived of medical care. The methods applied to gather necessary information were analysis of various data, and a social survey, following formalised questions in personal interviews to find out the level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention, behaviour patterns and attitudes, and find out the needs for services to the target group.
