Alternative disputes resolution is an alternative to judicial procedure. In comparison with judicial process, alternative dispute resolution is cheaper, faster and more effective process. The process of alternative disputes resolution is promoted at European Union level. Especially the initiative of European Commission is seen in this field. However there is no any legal or binding regulation concerning alternative consumer disputes resolution in European Union. Due to the absence of common regulation in this field in European Union, a wide variety can be noticed between the countries concerning alternative disputes resolution. There are no any traditions of alternative disputes resolution in Lithuania. Not long ago alternative disputes resolution has been applied for the settlement of consumers disputes only in certain areas of consumption. The Law Amending the Law on Consumer Rights Protection which came into force on 1 March 2007 states non judicial disputes resolution procedure in all areas of consumption. Using comparative, systematic and logical methods, the main aspects of non judicial disputes resolution procedure regulated in the latter Law are discovered as well as possible perspectives and problems of alternative disputes resolution in Lithuania are foreseen.
